Dog cake baking tips 1: First in a series to make homemade dog treat baking quick, easy and fun!
Tip #1 - For easy removal from cake pan
1. Be sure to grease the dog cake pan liberally including the sides! Use butter/shortening and flour sprinkled over that to ensure easy removal. If there is an issue with butter/shortening or flour, there are a variety of non-stick sprays made from vegetable oil you can use. It is best to even grease the "non-stick" pans to be sure the cake comes out easily. We even grease the silicone cake pans for a near-perfect cake.
2. Let the cake cool between 10 - 15 minutes ONLY. Prior to ten minutes, the cake is still warm and will crumble if you attempt removal. But after 20 minutes, the grease will begin to harden and stick to the cake and make removal difficult - the cake will stick to the pan.
3. If the pan has been greased amply, there will be no need to loosen the edges with a knife. Place a cake board or plate on top of the cake and turn it over. Then, either place another cake board, or the plate you want to put it on, on the exposed side and turn back over. Now the cake is ready for dog icing and other decorations.
Tip #2 - Top of cake split
1. If the cake splits on top, shrinks, develops holes, is too dry or burned, then it has probably been overbaked. Either the cake was left in the oven too long or the oven was too hot. A good tip to prevent this is to bake the cake 25 degrees lower than the recipe calls for, which will add 10 - 15 minutes to the baking time. As you are nearing the end of the baking time, check the cake by inserting a toothpick or fork into the center and if it comes out clean, the cake is done. Do not take the cake out of the oven to do this because this will cause the cake to start to cool and it will finish unevenly! Pull it to the edge of the rack keeping it still in the heated oven.
2. Too dry of a cake can be caused by under measuring the amount of water or oil needed for the recipe or leaving out an egg.
3. Overbeating the batter can cause the cake to split or dome.
